This was the introductory description:

GATES is an art project initially conceived of by an Italian artist, Caterina Davinio. Her work is about communication and she is also concerned about decentralisation. Basically, for GATES, she has asked people to construct a white doorframe –'the open gate' - and to do things in, around, in front of, behind etc the doorframe. 'Things' can be: play music, perform an action, have a conversation, recite a poem, show a video, anything in fact that takes your fancy. The theme of the work should relate somehow to the idea of communication, transit, opening, passages (wonderful!) - hence the use of the doorway.

The idea is to record the things done, using video and/or digital camera, so that a record of it can be sent to Rome. The people in Rome will then communicate this information to all the groups taking part.

Passages summer camp is going to take part in GATES. We are going to construct a white doorframe in the field. We haven't decided where yet, but we'll be careful to place it where it won't be intrusive. We'll also be careful to schedule times for things to be recorded, again so as not to be intrusive to the rest of the camp activities. We hope that everybody in the community of the summer camp, not only artists, will be inspired by the idea of the project and things will develop!

So far, people from the following places are taking part: Croatia, New York, London, Greece, Thailand, Los Angeles, Lebanon, Sao Paolo, Berlin, Valencia, Essex, and now Somerset! Work from the projects will be shown in Rome in September, in La Sapienza Museum in an exhibition called ArtConFusion which celebrates the 700th anniversary of the founding of the University of Rome, but essentially is to celebrate the plurality of voices we have in the world.

We'll be able to see the exhibition on the web in September, and there are plans to produce a catalogue too. We hope by taking part in GATES to link up with other like-minded people around the globe, perhaps see them coming over to Passages in the years to come, perhaps who knows, us going over to them!

We welcome any thoughts, ideas suggestions etc before the start of the summer camp if possible, or/and at the beginning of it, and throughout!
