Passages Summer 2003 Frank's pinhole photo's

At Passages Summer 2003 there was a series of sessions in using pinhole photography (using old biscuit tins, etc with pinholes, ordinary black and white photographic paper, and a small darkroom in a bender).

These come out originally as negatives and reversed.

These are the two pinhole photos that I took (other people took a lot more) and have had scanned in, and then manipulated on my computer using a free program called Irfanview and with a cheap program called Serif PhotoPlus 7.

The versions on this page are much reduced in terms of memory (mostly less than 50KB, and all less than 100KB) compared with the originals as saved after scanning (over 500KB each). The originals can be found via this link.

Abbreviations used fpd = Frank's Pinhole Door photos, fph = Frank's Pinhole Hearth structure (main fire) area

fpd-positive and fph-positive are positives made from the original negatives with very little other manipulation. fph-positive has been reversed left-right to get it back the right way round.

The series fpd01 to 15 are were various attempts to bring out more detail and to add various effects and false colour. I did not keep a record of the effects used, but I can remember some of them.

The diagonal lines are not on the original paper versions that I can tell. I am guessing that they are some sort of result of the scanning process, or possibly one of the very early manipulations. They only really became obvious as a result of trying to bring out the detail. I have not seen this sort of effect before. If I look closely at the "original" saves I can just about see them.

The circular effects are a result of the original paper versions getting dimmer towards the edges.

Can you spot the two places I appear as a ghost in the fpd's? The "ghost" effect is due to me moving around and then standing still in a couple of places during the 30 second exposure.

The hearth area photo was probably fogged due to light leaking into the camera.
